A voltmeter has a resistance of G ohm and a range of V volt. The resistance required in series to convert it into a voltmeter of range nV volt is ______.

Asked in GUJCET 2007 · Conversion to ammeter and voltmeter

Answer: (2) (n-1)G

Step-by-step solution

Given: a voltmeter of resistance G reading up to V; wanted, a range of nV.

Idea: full-scale deflection always corresponds to the same current through the meter, I_g=V/G.

With a series resistance R the new full-scale voltage is nV=I_g(G+R).

So G+R=(nV)/(I_g)=(nV)/(V/G)=nG.

Hence R=nG-G=(n-1)G — for example a 10× range needs nine times the meter's own resistance in series.
