Two identical coils having same number of turns and carrying equal current have common centre and their planes are at right angles to each other. What is the ratio of magnitude of the resultant magnetic field at the centre and the magnetic field due to one of the coils at the centre ?

Asked in GUJCET 2007 · Rotating charges and multiple loops

Answer: (1) √2 : 1

Step-by-step solution

Given: two identical coils, same N and same I, sharing a centre, with their planes perpendicular.

Idea: each coil's field at the centre points along that coil's own axis, so the two fields are at right angles to each other.

Each coil alone gives the same magnitude B=(μ₀ N I)/(2R).

Perpendicular vectors add in quadrature: Bₙₑₜ=√B²+B²=√2 B.

So Bₙₑₜ : B=√2 : 1.
