Idea: Ampere's circuital law was incomplete. Applied to a charging capacitor it gives a magnetic field for one surface spanning the loop and none for another, though both are bounded by the same loop.
Maxwell repaired it by adding a term built from the changing electric flux, i_d = ε₀(dΦ_E)/(dt), and named it the displacement current.
It is not a flow of charge at all; it is the effect of a changing electric field, and it produces a magnetic field just as a real current does.
So the current obtained from a change in the electric field is the displacement current.
