Practice portal › Electromagnetic Waves › The Plane Wave: Reading the Equation

An electromagnetic wave passing through the space is given by equations E=E₀ sin(ω t-kx), B=B₀ sin(ω t-kx). Which of the following is true ?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2017 · Reading omega, k, nu, lambda and v

Answer: (3) E₀k=B₀ω

Step-by-step solution

Idea: two facts settle this. The amplitudes of a plane electromagnetic wave satisfy (E₀)/(B₀)=c, and for any travelling wave the speed is c=ω/k.

Put them together: (E₀)/(B₀)=ω/k.

Cross-multiplying gives E₀k=B₀ω.

A units check confirms it: E₀k is V m⁻² and B₀ω is T s⁻¹, and since 1 T=1 V s m⁻² the two agree.

Why the other options are wrong
