Practice portal › Electromagnetic Waves › The Plane Wave: Reading the Equation

An electromagnetic wave passing through space is given by the equations E = E₀ sin(ω t - kx) and B = B₀ sin(ω t - kx). Which of the following is true?

Asked in GSEB Board March 2016 · Reading omega, k, nu, lambda and v

Answer: (3) E₀ k = B₀ω

Step-by-step solution

Idea: for a plane electromagnetic wave the two amplitudes are tied by (E₀)/(B₀) = c, and for any travelling wave the speed is c = ω/k.

Putting the two together, (E₀)/(B₀) = ω/k.

Cross-multiplying gives E₀ k = B₀ω.

Check the units: (E₀)/(B₀) is in m s⁻¹ and so is ω/k, so the two sides agree.

So the true relation is E₀ k = B₀ω.
