Idea: destroying a tumour cell needs radiation that reaches it through the tissue and carries enough energy per photon to damage the molecules inside it.
Gamma rays come from nuclear transitions, so each photon carries hundreds of keV or more, and a beam of them passes deep into the body.
That ionising damage breaks the DNA of the dividing cells, which is how the treatment works; the beam is produced by a cobalt source or a linear accelerator and aimed at the tumour.
So gamma rays are used to destroy cancer cells.
