For a uniform electric field ⃗E = E₀ ̂i, if the electric potential at x = 0 is zero, then the value of the electric potential at a distance x along the +x direction will be _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2016 · Relation between field and potential

Answer: (1) -xE₀

Step-by-step solution

Given: uniform field ⃗E = E₀ ̂i, and V = 0 at x = 0.

Idea: Eₓ = -(dV)/(dx), so V(x) - V(0) = -∫₀^x E₀ dx.

For a uniform field the integral is simply E₀x, so V(x) = 0 - E₀x.

The sign is negative because the potential falls as we move along the field.

So V = -xE₀.
