The self-inductances of two solenoids A and B of equal length are the same. The numbers of turns in solenoids A and B are 100 and 200 respectively. The ratio of the radii of their cross-sections, r_A:r_B, will be _____.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2017 · Coil geometry, cores and combinations

Answer: (1) 2:1

Step-by-step solution

Given: L_A=L_B, equal lengths, N_A=100, N_B=200.

Idea: for a long solenoid L=(μ₀N²A)/ℓ=(μ₀N²π r²)/ℓ.

Equal L and equal ℓ give N_A²r_A²=N_B²r_B², that is N_Ar_A=N_Br_B.

(r_A)/(r_B)=(N_B)/(N_A)=(200)/(100)=2.

So r_A:r_B=2:1.
