The distance between the two extreme points of the wings of an aeroplane is 60 m. It is flying at a speed of 720 km h⁻¹ in the horizontal direction. If the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field at that place is 2×10⁻⁴ Wb m⁻², the induced emf between these two end points is _______ V.

Answer: (3) 2.4

Step-by-step solution

Given: wingspan ℓ=60 m, v=720 km h⁻¹, B_V=2×10⁻⁴ T.

Idea: the horizontal wings cut the vertical component of the earth's field, so the emf between the tips is ε=B_Vℓ v. The horizontal component adds nothing: ⃗v×⃗B_H is vertical, so it has no component along the wings.

Convert the speed: v=720×5/(18)=200 m s⁻¹.

ε=2×10⁻⁴×60×200.

So ε=2.4 V.
