A charge Q is placed on each of (n-1) corners of a regular polygon of n sides. The distance of each corner from the centre of the polygon is r. The electric field at its centre is …..

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Field of discrete charges

Answer: (1) (kQ)/(r²)

Step-by-step solution

Idea: use superposition with the complete polygon.

With a charge Q on all n corners, the field at the centre is zero by symmetry.

The actual arrangement = complete polygon + a charge -Q at the empty corner.

So the field at the centre equals the field of that -Q alone: magnitude (kQ)/(r²), directed towards the empty corner.

So the field at the centre is (kQ)/(r²), whatever the value of n.
