The electric dipole moment of an HCl molecule is 3.4×10⁻³⁰ C m. The charges on the two atoms are unlike and of the same magnitude, and the distance between them is 1.0 A. The magnitude of this charge is …….

Answer: (2) 3.4×10⁻²⁰ C

Step-by-step solution

Given: p = 3.4×10⁻³⁰ C m, separation d = 1.0 A = 1.0×10⁻¹⁰ m.

Idea: dipole moment p = qd, so q = p/d.

q = (3.4×10⁻³⁰)/(1.0×10⁻¹⁰) = 3.4×10⁻²⁰ C

This is only about a fifth of e: in HCl the bonding electrons are shared unequally, not transferred whole.

So each charge has magnitude 3.4×10⁻²⁰ C.
