For a uniformly charged thin spherical shell, the electric field at any point outside the shell is

Asked in GSEB Board July 2023 · Shell and uniform solid sphere

Answer: (1) as if the total charge were concentrated at the centre

Step-by-step solution

Idea: apply Gauss's law on a concentric sphere of radius r larger than the shell's radius R.

By symmetry ⃗E is radial and has the same size all over this sphere, so the flux is E×4π r².

The sphere encloses the whole charge Q: E×4π r²=Q/(ε₀)

E=1/(4πε₀)Q/(r²) - exactly the field of a point charge Q placed at the centre.

Inside the shell the same argument encloses no charge, so there E=0.

Why the other options are wrong
