A square of side 10 cm has a uniform surface charge density of 2 mC m⁻². Calculate the total electric charge on the square.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2020 (old course) · Infinite sheet and sheet combinations

Answer: (3) 20 μC

Step-by-step solution

Given: side = 10 cm = 0.10 m, σ = 2 mC m⁻² = 2×10⁻³ C m⁻².

Idea: for a uniform surface charge, total charge = surface charge density × area.

Area A = (0.10)² = 1×10⁻² m²

Q = σ A = (2×10⁻³)(1×10⁻²) = 2×10⁻⁵ C

2×10⁻⁵ C = 20×10⁻⁶ C = 20 μC

So the total charge is 20 μC.
