An electric dipole is placed in a uniform electric field. The resultant force acting on it is _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2018 · Torque, energy and work done

Answer: (1) always zero

Step-by-step solution

Given: a dipole (+q and -q, separation 2a) in a uniform field ⃗E.

Idea: in a uniform field both charges feel the same field.

Force on +q: q⃗E; force on -q: -q⃗E.

Net force = q⃗E - q⃗E = 0, for any orientation and any dipole moment.

The two forces can still form a couple, so the torque τ = pE sin θ need not be zero.

So the resultant force is always zero.

Why the other options are wrong
