When a 10 μC charge is enclosed by a closed surface, the flux passing through the surface is φ. Now another -5 μC charge is placed inside the same closed surface. The flux passing through the surface is then _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2018 · Gauss's law and enclosed charge

Answer: (2) φ/2

Step-by-step solution

Given: q₁=10 μC inside gives flux φ; a second charge q₂=-5 μC is added inside.

Idea: Gauss's law. The flux through a closed surface depends only on the net charge enclosed: φ=(qᵢₙ)/(ε₀).

Before: φ=(10 μC)/(ε₀)

After: qᵢₙ=10+(-5)=5 μC, so φ'=(5 μC)/(ε₀)

(φ')/φ=5/(10)=1/2

So the flux becomes φ/2.

Why the other options are wrong
