Charges Q each are placed on four corners of a regular pentagon. The distance of each corner from the centre of the pentagon is r. The electric field at its centre is

Asked in GSEB Board July 2018 · Field of discrete charges

Answer: (1) (KQ)/(r²)

Step-by-step solution

Given: charge Q on four of the five corners, each a distance r from the centre.

Idea: compare with the full pentagon and use superposition.

If all five corners carried Q, the five fields at the centre would be equal in size and spaced 72° apart, so by symmetry they would add to zero.

The actual arrangement is (full pentagon) minus (a charge Q at the empty corner): ⃗E=0-⃗E₅.

So the field has the size of one corner's field and points towards the empty corner (for positive Q):

E=(KQ)/(r²)
