What will be the magnitude of the torque on an electric dipole of dipole moment 4×10⁻⁹ C m placed in a uniform electric field of intensity 5×10⁴ N C⁻¹, making an angle of 180° with the field?

Asked in GSEB Board March 2018 · Torque, energy and work done

Answer: (2) 0 (zero)

Step-by-step solution

Given: p = 4×10⁻⁹ C m, E = 5×10⁴ N C⁻¹, θ = 180°.

Idea: the torque on a dipole in a uniform field is τ = pE sin θ.

τ = (4×10⁻⁹)(5×10⁴)sin 180° = (2×10⁻⁴)×0

At 180° the forces +q⃗E and -q⃗E act along the same line (the dipole's axis), so they have no turning effect; the dipole is in unstable equilibrium.

So the torque is 0 (zero).
