The electric field intensity due to an electric dipole on its axis at a distance x (x a) and on its equatorial line at a distance y (y a) are the same. What is the ratio of x and y?

Asked in GUJCET 2021 · Dipole moment and dipole field

Answer: (1) √[3]2:1

Step-by-step solution

Given: a short dipole of moment p; an axial point at distance x and an equatorial point at distance y (x,y a) have equal fields.

Idea: for a short dipole, Eₐₓᵢₐₗ=(2kp)/(x³) and E_equatorial=(kp)/(y³).

(2kp)/(x³)=(kp)/(y³)⇒ x³=2y³

x/y=√[3]2≈1.26

So x:y=√[3]2:1.
