The de Broglie wavelengths of a proton and an α-particle are the same. Which physical quantity should then be the same for both?

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Equal wavelengths and equal speeds

Answer: (4) momentum

Step-by-step solution

Idea: de Broglie wavelength λ = h/p depends only on the momentum p.

If λₚ = λ_α, then h/(pₚ) = h/(p_α), so pₚ = p_α.

The masses differ (m_α ≈ 4mₚ), so their velocities and kinetic energies differ.

So the quantity that must be the same is the momentum.

Why the other options are wrong
