What is the order of the strong electric field that must be applied to a metal so that electrons can be pulled out of the metal?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2023 · Conceptual points of the photoelectric effect

Answer: (2) 10⁶ V cm⁻¹

Step-by-step solution

Idea: field emission. A very strong electric field, of the order of 10⁸ V m⁻¹, can pull electrons out of a metal, as in a spark plug.

Convert to per centimetre using 1 m = 100 cm.

10⁸ V m⁻¹ = (10⁸ V)/(100 cm) = 10⁶ V cm⁻¹

So the field must be of the order of 10⁶ V cm⁻¹.

Why the other options are wrong
