The resistance of a 10 m long wire is 20 Ω. It is connected in series with a 3 V battery and a 10 Ω resistor. The potential difference between two points on the wire separated by a distance of 30 cm is equal to ______.

Answer: (2) 0.06 V

Step-by-step solution

Given: wire of length 10 m and resistance 20 Ω, in series with a 3 V battery and 10 Ω; a section of length 0.30 m.

Idea: find the current in the series circuit, then the resistance of the 30 cm section, then use V = IR.

I = 3/(20 + 10) = 0.1 A.

Resistance per metre = (20)/(10) = 2 Ω m⁻¹, so the section has 2×0.30 = 0.6 Ω.

V = 0.1×0.6 = 0.06 V.

So the potential difference is 0.06 V.
