In a hydrogen atom, the electron is moving in a circular orbit of radius 5.0×10⁻¹¹ m with a constant speed of 2×10⁶ m s⁻¹. The electric current formed due to the motion of the electron is _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2018 · Current and charge flow

Answer: (3) 1.02 mA

Step-by-step solution

Given: r=5.0×10⁻¹¹ m, v=2×10⁶ m s⁻¹, e=1.6×10⁻¹⁹ C.

Idea: the electron carries its charge e past any point of the orbit once every revolution, so the orbit behaves as a current I=e/T.

Period: T=(2π r)/v=(2π×5.0×10⁻¹¹)/(2×10⁶)=1.57×10⁻¹⁶ s.

I=e/T=(1.6×10⁻¹⁹)/(1.57×10⁻¹⁶).

I=1.02×10⁻³ A=1.02 mA.
