A ring of radius R and linear charge density λ on its surface is performing rotational motion about an axis perpendicular to its plane. If the angular velocity of the ring is ω, how much current is constituted by the ring?

Asked in GSEB Board March 2020 (old course) · Current and charge flow

Answer: (3) Rλω

Step-by-step solution

Given: a ring of radius R with linear charge density λ, spinning with angular velocity ω.

Idea: current is the charge passing a fixed point per unit time, and the whole charge of the ring passes once in every period.

Charge on the ring: q = λ(2π R).

Period of rotation: T = (2π)/ω.

I = q/T = (2π Rλ)/(2π/ω) = Rλω.

So the rotating ring constitutes a current I = Rλω.
