The total energy and kinetic energy of an electron in a hydrogen atom are E and K respectively. Then,

Asked in GSEB Board July 2021 · Energy levels and ionisation

Answer: (2) K=-E

Step-by-step solution

Idea: in a circular Coulomb orbit the force balance ties the kinetic energy to the potential energy.

Force balance: (mv²)/r=(ke²)/(r²), so K=1/2mv²=(ke²)/(2r).

Potential energy: U=-(ke²)/r=-2K.

Total energy: E=K+U=K-2K=-K.

So K=-E; in the ground state, for example, E=-13.6 eV and K=+13.6 eV.
