The energy required to excite an electron of the hydrogen atom from its ground state to the second excited state is _____ eV.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2022 · Energy levels and ionisation

Answer: (2) 12.09

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the energy needed is E_f-Eᵢ, with Eₙ=-(13.6)/(n²) eV.

The second excited state is n=3 (the ground state is n=1).

E₃=-(13.6)/(3²)=-1.51 eV and E₁=-13.6 eV.

Δ E=13.6(1-1/9)=13.6×8/9=12.09 eV.
