If the potential energy of the electron in the hydrogen atom is -(e²)/(4πε₀ r), then what is its kinetic energy?

Asked in GSEB Board March 2019 · Energy levels and ionisation

Answer: (1) (e²)/(8πε₀ r)

Step-by-step solution

Given: U=-(e²)/(4πε₀ r) for the electron in an orbit of radius r.

Idea: the Coulomb attraction of the proton provides the centripetal force.

(mv²)/r=(e²)/(4πε₀ r²), so mv²=(e²)/(4πε₀ r).

K=1/2mv²=(e²)/(8πε₀ r).

This is K=-U/2: half the size of the potential energy, and positive.
