Which of the following combinations should be selected for better tuning of an LCR a.c. circuit used for communication?

Asked in GSEB Board March 2023 · Resonance condition and tuning

Answer: (1) R=15 Ω, L=3.5 H, C=30 μF

Step-by-step solution

Idea: better tuning means a sharper resonance, i.e. a larger quality factor Q=1/R√L/C.

So we want a small R, a large L and a small C.

First set: Q=1/(15)√(3.5)/(30×10⁻⁶)=(341.6)/(15)≈22.8.

The same formula gives Q≈9.4 for the second set, ≈10.4 for the third and ≈7.3 for the fourth.

So R=15 Ω, L=3.5 H, C=30 μF gives the best tuning.
