For an L-C-R A.C. circuit the resonant frequency is 600 Hz and the frequencies at the half-power points are 550 Hz and 650 Hz. What will be the Q-factor?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2015 · Power and bandwidth at resonance

Answer: (3) 6

Step-by-step solution

Given: f₀=600 Hz, half-power frequencies f₁=550 Hz and f₂=650 Hz.

Idea: the Q-factor compares the resonant frequency with the bandwidth, the width of the band between the two half-power points.

Bandwidth: f₂-f₁=650-550=100 Hz.

Q=(f₀)/(f₂-f₁)=(600)/(100)=6.

A narrower band around the same f₀ would mean a sharper resonance and a larger Q.

So the Q-factor is 6.
