Power delivered: P=VᵣₘₛIᵣₘₛ cos φ.
For a fixed power P at a fixed voltage V, the current needed is I=P/(V cos φ).
A low power factor cos φ therefore means a large current in the line.
The line has resistance R, so the heat lost in it is I²R=(P²R)/(V² cos²φ).
So a low power factor implies a large power loss in transmission.
