A coil of inductance L and resistance R is connected to an A.C. source of V volt. If the angular frequency of the A.C. source is ω rad s⁻¹, then the current in the circuit will be _______.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2018 · Current in a series LCR

Answer: (4) V/(√R²+ω²L²)

Step-by-step solution

The coil behaves as a resistance R in series with a pure inductance L.

Inductive reactance: X_L=ω L.

The voltage across R is in phase with the current, while the voltage across L leads it by 90°, so the two add as perpendicular phasors.

Impedance: Z=√R²+X_L²=√R²+ω²L².

Current: I=V/Z=V/(√R²+ω²L²).
