The power in an AC circuit is given by P=VᵣₘₛIᵣₘₛ cos δ. The power factor at the resonant frequency of a series L-C-R circuit will be _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2015 · Power factor

Answer: (2) 1

Step-by-step solution

Given: a series L-C-R circuit driven at its resonant frequency.

Idea: at resonance X_L=X_C, so the net reactance X_L-X_C is zero.

Then Z=√R²+(X_L-X_C)²=R and tan δ=(X_L-X_C)/R=0, so δ=0.

Power factor cos δ=R/Z=1: voltage and current are in phase and the circuit takes the most power it can.

So the power factor is 1.
