V and I in an A.C. circuit are given by the following equations: V=100 sin(100t) V, I=100 sin (100t+π/3) mA. The power in the circuit is equal to ______ W.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2016 · Average power and heating

Answer: (3) 2.5

Step-by-step solution

Given: V₀=100 V, I₀=100 mA=0.1 A, phase difference φ=π/3=60°.

Idea: average power P=VᵣₘₛIᵣₘₛ cos φ=(V₀I₀)/2 cos φ.

(V₀I₀)/2=(100×0.1)/2=5 W.

cos 60°=1/2, so P=5×1/2=2.5 W.

So the power in the circuit is 2.5 W.
