The charge of the capacitor in an L-C oscillatory circuit, when the energies associated with the inductor and the capacitor are equal, is ______ [Q₀ is the initial charge on the capacitor].

Asked in GUJCET 2023 · Energy exchange and damping in LC

Answer: (4) (Q₀)/(√2)

Step-by-step solution

Idea: with no resistance the total energy stays U = (Q₀²)/(2C), all of it in the capacitor at the start.

When the two energies are equal, each is half the total: (q²)/(2C) = 1/2×(Q₀²)/(2C).

So q² = (Q₀²)/2.

q = (Q₀)/(√2).
