A lamp consumes only 50% of maximum power in an A.C. circuit. What is the phase difference between the applied voltage and the circuit current?

Asked in GUJCET 2018 · Power factor

Answer: (2) π/3

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the average power is P=VᵣₘₛIᵣₘₛ cos φ.

For given Vᵣₘₛ and Iᵣₘₛ it is largest, Pₘₐₓ=VᵣₘₛIᵣₘₛ, when φ=0.

So P/(Pₘₐₓ)=cos φ=(50)/(100)=1/2.

cos φ=1/2⇒φ=60°=π/3.

So the phase difference is π/3.
