When n type semiconductor is heated

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 1989 · Doping and carrier concentration

Answer: (4) number of electrons and holes increases equally

Step-by-step solution

Idea: heating a semiconductor promotes electrons from the valence band across the gap.

Each promotion creates one conduction electron and one hole, always in pairs.

So the INCREASE in electrons equals the increase in holes.

The material stays n-type overall, because the donor electrons are still there on top of the thermally generated pairs, but the added carriers arrive equally.

Why the other options are wrong
