The correct relation for α, β for a transistor

Step-by-step solution

Idea: start from the current split at the emitter, I_E=I_B+I_C.

α=(I_C)/(I_E) and β=(I_C)/(I_B).

So β=(I_C)/(I_E-I_C), and dividing top and bottom by I_E gives β=(I_C/I_E)/(1-I_C/I_E).

β=α/(1-α).

As a check, α=0.98 gives β=49, which is the usual order of magnitude.
