Reverse bias applied to a junction diode

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 2003 · Depletion region and barrier potential

Answer: (2) raises the potential barrier

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the applied voltage either opposes the built-in barrier or adds to it, and reverse bias is the case that adds.

Connecting the negative terminal to the p-side and the positive terminal to the n-side pulls holes and electrons away from the junction.

More ionised impurities are left uncovered on each side, so the depletion region widens and the potential across it grows.

The barrier is therefore raised, which is why majority carriers can no longer cross and the diode blocks.

Why the other options are wrong
