Asked in CBSE AIPMT 2003 · Energy released in fission and fusion
The Sun's core is hot and dense enough for hydrogen nuclei, that is protons, to fuse.
Four protons combine in stages to form one helium nucleus, releasing around 26 MeV each time.
This is what has kept the Sun radiating at a roughly steady rate for billions of years.
So solar energy comes mainly from the fusion of protons during the synthesis of heavier elements.
