The nucleus ¹¹⁵₄₈Cd, after two successive β-decay will give

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 1988 · Q-value, decay and conservation laws

Answer: (4) ¹¹⁵₅₀Sn

Step-by-step solution

Each β⁻ decay converts a neutron into a proton inside the nucleus.

So the atomic number rises by 1 each time and the mass number does not change at all.

Two successive decays: Z=48+2=50.

The mass number stays at A=115.

Z=50 is tin, so the product is ¹¹⁵₅₀Sn.
