Sunlight arrives mostly as visible and near-infrared radiation and warms the ground.
The warmed ground re-radiates at its own much lower temperature, which by Wien's law puts that
emission well into the infrared.
Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapour absorb strongly in the infrared and
re-emit in all directions, trapping part of that outgoing energy.
So the infra-red rays are the cause.
