A capacitor of capacitance C is connected across an ac source of voltage V, given by
V=V₀ sin ω t
The displacement current between the plates of the capacitor would then be given by

Asked in NEET 2021 · Capacitor on an a.c. source

Answer: (1) I_d=V₀ω C cos ω t

Step-by-step solution

Inside the capacitor there is no conduction current; the displacement current there equals the

conduction current in the leads, which is I=C(dV)/(dt).

I_d=Cd/(dt)(V₀ sin ω t)=CV₀ω cos ω t.

So I_d=V₀ω C cos ω t.

The cosine says the current leads the applied voltage by π/2, as it must for a capacitor.
