An electron moves on a straight line path XY as shown. abcd is a coil adjacent to the path of the electron. What will be the direction of current, if any, induced in the coil?

Asked in NEET 2015 · Direction of the induced current

Figure: Direction of the induced current
Answer: (1) The current will reverse its direction as the electron goes past the coil

Step-by-step solution

A moving electron carries a magnetic field with it, so the flux through the nearby coil changes

as it passes.

While the electron approaches, that flux grows, and by Lenz's law the induced current flows so as

to oppose the growth.

Once the electron has gone past, the flux falls again, so the induced current must reverse to

oppose the decrease.

No single direction is correct for the whole passage, which is why the first option is the only

true statement.

Why the other options are wrong
