Two positive ions, each carrying a charge q, are separated by a distance d. If F is the force of repulsion between the ions, the number of electrons missing from each ion will be (e being the charge on an electron)

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 2010 · Properties of charge

Answer: (3) √(4πε₀ Fd²)/(e²)

Step-by-step solution

Each ion is short of n electrons, so it carries q=ne.

Coulomb's law for the repulsion:

F=1/(4πε₀)(q²)/(d²)=1/(4πε₀)(n²e²)/(d²)

Rearranging for n²:

n²=(4πε₀ Fd²)/(e²)

n=√(4πε₀ Fd²)/(e²)

Charge is quantised, so n has to come out a whole number for any real measurement.
