An electric kettle takes 4 A current at 220 V. How much time will it take to boil 1 kg of water from temperature 20°C? The temperature of boiling water is 100°C.

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 2008 · Heating and power in resistors

Answer: (3) 6.3 min

Step-by-step solution

Heat needed: Q = mcΔ T = 1×4200×80 = 336 000 J.

Power: P = VI = 220×4 = 880 W.

t = Q/P = (336 000)/(880) = 382 s.

t = 6.36 min, i.e. about 6.3 min.
