In Rutherford scattering experiment, what will be the correct angle for α-scattering for an impact parameter, b=0?

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 1994 · Rutherford's model and its limits

Answer: (4) 180°

Step-by-step solution

Idea: Rutherford's relation between impact parameter and scattering angle is b=1/(4πε₀)(Ze² cot(θ/2))/E.

Setting b=0 forces cot θ/2=0.

cot vanishes at 90°, so θ/2=90°.

Therefore θ=180°: an alpha particle aimed straight at the nucleus is turned back along its own path.
