A closed organ pipe has a fundamental frequency of 30 Hz. Water is poured in so that the fundamental frequency rises to 110 Hz. If the pipe has a cross-sectional area of 2 cm², the amount of water poured in is ______ g. (Speed of sound in air =330 m s⁻¹)

Asked in JEE Main 30th Jan 1st Shift 2024 · Pipe with water or another gas

Answer: 400

Step-by-step solution

Closed pipe: f=v/(4l), so originally l₁=(330)/(4×30)=2.75 m and afterwards l₂=(330)/(4×110)=0.75 m.

The water column is 2.75-0.75=2.0 m tall.

Volume =2.0×2×10⁻⁴=4×10⁻⁴ m³=400 cm³, which is 400 g of water.
