A transverse wave passes at 60 m s⁻¹ through a string of length 50 cm and mass 10 g. The cross-sectional area is 2.0 mm² and the Young's modulus is 1.2×10¹¹ N m⁻². The extension of the wire over its natural length due to the tension is x×10⁻⁵ m. The value of x is ______.

Asked in JEE Main 29th July 2nd Shift 2022 · Transverse wave on a string

Answer: 15

Step-by-step solution

μ=(10×10⁻³)/(0.50)=0.02 kg m⁻¹, so the tension is T=μ v²=0.02×3600=72 N.

Δ L=(TL)/(AY)=(72×0.50)/(2.0×10⁻⁶×1.2×10¹¹)=(36)/(2.4×10⁵).

Δ L=1.5×10⁻⁴ m =15×10⁻⁵ m, so x=15.
