A ball of mass 100 g is dropped from a height h=10 cm on a platform fixed at the top of a vertical spring (as shown in figure). The ball stays on the platform and the platform is depressed by a distance /h2. The spring constant is ______ N m⁻¹. (Use g=10 m s⁻²)

Asked in JEE Main 24th June 1st Shift 2022 · Energy stored and maximum compression

Figure: Energy stored and maximum compression
Answer: 120

Step-by-step solution

From release to the lowest point the ball drops h+/h2=0.15 m and the spring compresses 0.05 m.

mg(0.15)=1/2k(0.05)²⇒0.1×10×0.15=0.00125 k.

k=120 N m⁻¹.
