A uniform chain of length 2 m is kept on a table such that a length of 60 cm hangs freely from the edge of the table. The total mass of the chain is 4 kg. What is the work done in pulling the entire chain on the table?

Asked in AIEEE 2004 · Work done by gravity and contact forces

Answer: (2) 3.6 J

Step-by-step solution

Mass per unit length: 4/2=2 kg/m, so the hanging 0.6 m has mass 1.2 kg.

Its centre of mass is 0.3 m below the table top.

W=1.2×10×0.3=3.6 J (with g=10 m/s²).
