A large cylindrical rod of length L is made by joining two identical rods of copper and steel of length L/2 each. The rods are completely insulated from the surroundings. If the free end of the copper rod is maintained at 100 °C and that of the steel at 0 °C, then the temperature of the junction is (thermal conductivity of copper is 9 times that of steel)

Asked in JEE Main Online 2012 · Junction temperature

Answer: (1) 90 °C

Step-by-step solution

Given: equal lengths L/2 and equal areas, with K_Cu=9Kₛ.

Idea: in the steady state the heat currents through the two halves are equal, so set them equal rather than averaging the end temperatures.

(9KₛA(100-T))/(L/2)=(KₛA(T-0))/(L/2), and everything common cancels.

9(100-T)=T, so 900=10T.

T=90 °C; the junction sits close to the hot end because the copper offers almost no resistance.
